On Sunday, the Akyem Kotoku Environmental Task Force conducted an anti-galamsey operation in New Abirem, resulting in the apprehension of 20 suspected illegal miners, including two Chinese nationals.
The suspects were found engaged in illegal mining activities at a site near the Abirem Roman Missionary House in the Birim North District.

During the operation, authorities confiscated three excavators, various mining equipment, and two pumping machines. The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before the court.
The arrests followed a confrontation the previous day between local youth and the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Raymond Nana Damptey, who was accompanied by police.
The youth attempted to block the entry of two low-bed trucks transporting excavators into the community, believing these were intended for illegal mining.
Reports indicate that these excavators were later seen at the mining site behind the Roman Missionary House.
Hon. Damptey has faced allegations from local youth and chiefs regarding his involvement in galamsey activities, which he has consistently denied.
However, a viral video surfaced showing the DCE alongside Nana Aduasenehene allegedly trying to persuade the youth to allow the excavators’ entry.
Eric Gyataba, head of the task force, expressed frustration over the challenges posed by individuals in authority who undermine their efforts to combat illegal mining activities.
