Ivory Coast took center stage on the inaugural night of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, triumphing as the host nation with a 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau. The Alassane Ouattara Stadium, named after the country’s president, witnessed a vibrant opening ceremony attended by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, setting the stage for an electrifying start to the hotly-contested AFCON under the evening lights.

The impressive 60,000-seater arena buzzed with excitement as Seko Fofana netted the tournament’s first goal just four minutes into the game, seemingly establishing it as a night dominated by Les Elephants. Despite their early lead, Ivory Coast faced a resilient Guinea-Bissau side, ranked outside the world’s top 100, which displayed slick movement and comfortable possession, challenging the host nation throughout the first half.

Ivory Coast’s superior talent occasionally shone through, with Fofana hitting the crossbar and goalkeeper Ouparine Djoco making a superb fingertip save to deny a repeat of the first goal. Jean-Philippe Krasso, avoiding a needless dive for a penalty, secured the second goal just before the hour mark.

As the pressure of the opening night eased, Ivory Coast attacked with increased pace in pursuit of a third goal. However, Guinea-Bissau’s substitute Franculino Dju broke through one-on-one, testing Yahia Fofana, who made a strong save.

The action in Group A continues on Sunday with Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea facing off before the much-anticipated clash between the Super Eagles and Ivory Coast on Thursday, promising to be a highlight of the group stage.
