The Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, has confidently assured the African Union (AU) Election Observation Team that Ghana is fully prepared for a peaceful and transparent election on December 7, 2024.

Quartey emphasized that the government has put in place a comprehensive security strategy, including the establishment of an Election Security Task Force, to ensure that the elections are conducted in a secure environment free from disturbances.

This effort is also backed by robust logistical support to facilitate smooth and efficient election day operations.

During a meeting with the AU delegation, Quartey underscored the commitment of the government to uphold the democratic principles that have made Ghana a beacon of stability in Africa.

He noted that a series of preparatory activities have been carried out, including multiple dialogues with key stakeholders such as political parties, the Electoral Commission, civil society groups, and the media.

These engagements have fostered a shared commitment to conducting peaceful elections, with a focus on transparency, inclusiveness, and fairness.

Additionally, Quartey reassured the AU team that Ghana’s political leadership, under President Nana Akufo-Addo, remains dedicated to the rule of law and a peaceful transition of power, should there be a change in government.

The Interior Minister pointed out that President Akufo-Addo, a strong proponent of democratic governance, has always ensured that power transitions in Ghana occur peacefully, and he is committed to upholding this legacy in the upcoming elections.

This assurance follows the visit of the AU Election Observation Team, led by former Ethiopian President H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde. Zewde expressed her confidence in Ghana’s ability to hold free and fair elections, citing the country’s consistent track record of peaceful and democratic elections in the past. She also praised the strong institutional frameworks in place to safeguard the electoral process and ensure that it meets international standards.

Zewde further stated that the AU Election Observation Team is confident that Ghana’s elections will set a positive example for the rest of the continent, reinforcing the country’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies.

She emphasized that the success of the 2024 elections would not only strengthen Ghana’s democracy but would also contribute to the ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability across the region.

The AU’s involvement in the 2024 elections is in line with its broader mandate to support member states in consolidating democratic governance, ensuring electoral integrity, and advancing peace and security.

The team’s visit is seen as an important step in enhancing international confidence in Ghana’s election process and ensuring that all measures are in place to prevent any challenges during the election period.

In conclusion, the Interior Minister’s reassurances, combined with the AU’s confidence, reflect the collective commitment of all stakeholders to ensuring the 2024 elections will be peaceful, transparent, and uphold Ghana’s democratic values.

This further reinforces Ghana’s position as a model of democracy in Africa, with a robust election management system and a stable political environment.
