Thirty-eight (38) fishermen have been successfully rescued following a robbery at sea off Senya Breku in the Central Region.
The victims, who were in two locally manufactured canoes, were safely brought to shore by a joint rescue team comprising the Marine Police and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The operation was launched after reports emerged that several fishermen had been left stranded at sea following the attack.
According to initial accounts, the fishermen had set out in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, for their usual fishing expedition. While returning to shore, they were allegedly ambushed by armed hijackers in a black boat.
The assailants reportedly opened fire and stole outboard motors and generator sets, leaving the fishermen helpless in the water. The attack has raised fears among coastal fishing communities, where such incidents are reportedly increasing.
Additional canoes linked to the attack have since been located.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces launched a search operation at dawn, approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Senya Breku, to rescue any remaining victims.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 26, the Force urged the public to remain calm and assured that further details would be shared as they become available.
The Criminal Investigations Department has also begun recording statements from the rescued fishermen.
