NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama issued a strong warning to President Akufo-Addo concerning an $800 million gas processing contract. He expressed concern that signing this deal could result in significant financial losses for the country in the future.

Mahama’s comments came after allegations from Minority Spokesperson on Energy, John Jinapor, who claimed that the CEO of Ghana National Gas was being pressured by the presidency to finalize the contract without proper legislative oversight.

Mahama emphasized the necessity for the contract to be presented to Parliament for examination, questioning the government’s rush to finalize the agreement as its term nears its end.

During a community engagement in Town Council Line, Greater Accra Region, on September 28, Mahama warned that the contract’s long-term implications could bind the nation for years, stating that those involved would be held accountable if financial losses occur.

“The NPP administration knows they are leaving office and is trying to sign an agreement that commits the country to certain projects for their benefit. For eight years, this government has failed to invest in increasing gas production.

“Even though there isn’t sufficient gas available, they are hastily committing the nation to a second gas stream before their term ends.

“I warn them that this could result in financial losses for the state and potential judgment debts. If they haven’t signed it yet, they should not proceed.

This $800 million gas processing contract must be approved by Parliament. You cannot secretly sign this contract without the consent of the Ghanaian people. We will hold you accountable if it leads to judgment debts.”

“At this late stage of your government, you should not be busy signing contracts that will bind the nation for many years.

Let me caution everyone involved in this contract that they will be held responsible if the state suffers financial losses.”

He pledged to oppose any actions that do not serve the best interests of Ghanaians.

“I have promised the people of Ghana not just jobs and prosperity but also accountability. You can be assured that under the Mahama presidency, acts that are not in the interest of the good people of this country will not be allowed to proceed.”
