Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has sharply criticized Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and Minister of Agriculture, for his recent controversial remarks at a rally in Nsawam.

During the rally, Bryan Acheampong declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would use any means necessary to secure victory in the 2024 general election, adding that those who disagreed could “burn the sea.”

In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Ablakwa condemned such rhetoric, stating that it is unacceptable for a high-ranking official like Acheampong and called for more restraint in political discourse.

Ablakwa also described President Akufo-Addo’s recent comments, where he implied that he would not hand over power, as “undemocratic,” further expressing his concerns about the government’s commitment to democratic values.

“They are so hell-bent, President Akufo-Addo would consistently say that he’s not going to hand over, very undemocratic statement.

This is not a responsible thought, they can be couched in a manner if you say that you hope to win, but to say that you won’t hand over and to have your Agric Minister say that no matter what happens, by hook or crook, they won’t hand over, I mean, such very inflammatory, incendiary and unconstitutional language should not be coming from high office holders.”

In 2021, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed his intent to hand over power to another NPP government in 2025, stating that the party’s internal actions before the next election would determine the feasibility of this goal.

By 2023, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the presidency would be passed on to an NPP successor in 2024, emphasizing the importance of sustaining his political legacy.

Most recently, in August 2024, President Akufo-Addo reassured the nation that he would step down as President at the end of his tenure, with no intentions of resisting or attempting to cling to power.
