North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has criticized the media for letting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo off the hook for his refusal to engage with them directly since 2020.

Ablakwa expressed surprise that the Ghanaian media has accepted this situation as the new normal, stating that no president in Ghana’s Fourth Republic has been allowed to get away with what Akufo-Addo is doing. He described the situation as “absolutely despicable!”

In a social media post on April 20, 2024, Ablakwa noted that the president is enjoying a level of media leniency that his predecessors did not have.

Ablakwa’s post was prompted by the ongoing power outages, which he believes require direct intervention from the president.

He argued that the president should hold a press conference and a people’s assembly to understand the current reality, rather than relying on his “deceptive, inept, and arrogant appointees” who are asking citizens to prepare their own timetables for power outages.

The issue of power outages has become a hot topic, with the government insisting that the outages do not warrant a timetable.

The power distributor has also faced criticism for failing to admit that the current challenges require a timetable, despite a ruling by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to that effect.
