President Nana Akufo-Addo has granted a Presidential Charter to Academic City University College, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey. This new status allows Academic City to operate as an independent tertiary institution, with the authority to award its own degrees.

Academic City becomes one of the youngest universities in Ghana to achieve this feat, further solidifying its commitment to becoming a hub for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) excellence in Africa. The achievement underscores the university’s dedication to delivering quality education and industry-relevant programs.

The process of obtaining the Presidential Charter began last year and involved a comprehensive review by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), with approval from the Ministry of Education.

The review assessed various factors including teaching methods, infrastructure, curriculum, financial stability, staff qualifications, and governance.

Since its establishment seven years ago, Academic City has focused on enhancing higher education in Africa, earning recognition in the process. In 2023, the university was ranked 15th in Sub-Saharan Africa and 2nd in Ghana by Times Higher Education (THE).

Prof. Fred McBagonluri, President of Academic City, expressed his excitement about the achievement, noting that it allows the university to innovate boldly and offer forward-thinking programs that equip students for professional success.

He emphasized that the Presidential Charter provides a strong foundation for improving teaching methods and fostering creativity in students to solve complex problems.

The university distinguishes itself through a unique model of education that prioritises experiential, contextual, unified, and extensional learning, all while emphasising entrepreneurship. This approach ensures that graduates are equipped to become ‘Future-Ready Leaders’.

The university has the best-equipped workshops furnished with real state-of-the-art industry machinery and equipment to offer students first-hand practical experiences in their fields of study, be it communication arts, computational sciences, engineering or business.
