The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to distribute 2,000 new street lights across the metropolitan area by the end of this week in response to concerns about malfunctioning street lights posing a safety threat.
This announcement was made during the Public Financial Management Town Hall Meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, which aimed to account for government projects implemented through the Assembly from 2017 to date.
The Mayor of AMA, Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey acknowledged that some street lights had been non-functional but assured residents that the new distribution would improve nighttime safety.
“It isn’t that we haven’t given out street lights. We’ve given out street lights. Unfortunately, some have been off. At the same time, I want to assure you that we have about 2,000 street lights which we are planning to distribute by the end of this week.”
She highlighted the AMA’s commitment to utilising public funds efficiently to enhance residents’ lives, citing various projects implemented since 2017.
Among these projects are the construction of a three-story, 18-unit classroom block for the Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools, a two-unit kindergarten block for Bubiashie 1 Basic School, and a childcare centre at Old Fadama.
She also mentioned the distribution of 2,850 dual desks to public basic schools in the metropolis and the declaration of Accra as the 2023 World Book Capital to promote reading.
The event, attended by regional executives, local government officials, and community leaders, aimed to account for government projects implemented through the Assembly.
Mayor Sackey encouraged residents to continue supporting the government, emphasizing the Assembly’s dedication to improving living conditions.
