Lawyer Martin Kpebu, representing Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Agordzo, has announced that his client intends to file a lawsuit against the state.

This decision comes in response to what he deems a baseless case brought against ACP Agordzo during the recently concluded treason trial.

On January 24, 2024, an Accra High Court sentenced six individuals to death by hanging after convicting them of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason.

Notably, the court acquitted ACP Agordzo, Colonel Samuel Kodzo Gameli, and another junior military officer, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, who were also among the accused.

In a statement to the press following the court’s verdict, Martin Kpebu characterized the charges against his client as frivolous and confirmed ACP Agordzo’s intention to pursue legal action against the state seeking compensation.

Speaking to journalists following the court’s ruling, Martin Kpebu described the charges brought against his client as frivolous and noted that his client will sue the state for compensation.

“The state wrote a very frivolous case, frivolous to the highest degree around his neck and today you see the court has exonerated him.

“We will sue the state for compensation because this case has always been frivolous against him from day one,” he told reporters.

Among those sentenced to death, three individuals were soldiers: Donya Kafui, also known as Ezor (a blacksmith), and Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu (a fleet manager).

They were both found guilty of conspiracy to commit treason. Johannes Zikpi, a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces, was convicted of conspiracy to commit high treason.

The other three sentenced individuals were soldiers as well: Warrant Officer II Esther Saan Dekuwine, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, and Corporal Sylvester Akanpewon.

They were all found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason.
