Afenyo-Markin, in an interview with Citi FM’s Umaru Sanda Amadu, revealed that a crucial meeting took place between Dr. Bawumia and the parliamentary leadership on June 28.
The meeting centered on the selection of a running mate, with Dr. Opoku Prempeh emerging as the preferred choice.
This decision is subject to ratification by the national council, which is expected to be a formality.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the party leader and flagbearer briefed the parliamentary leadership on the decision, adhering to the party’s established practice.
He subsequently engaged with the caucus, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback and support for Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s candidacy.
With the national council meeting expected to formalize the decision, Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence in a consensus in favor of Dr. Opoku Prempeh.
He also disclosed that President Akufo-Addo has expressed positive views on the choice, further solidifying the party’s unity.
Afenyo-Markin urged the majority caucus to rally behind Dr. Opoku Prempeh, emphasizing the importance of a united front ahead of the 2024 elections.
He cautioned fellow NPP MPs to exercise discretion in their public statements, avoiding any comments that could harm the party’s chances.
The meeting and subsequent engagements suggest a coordinated effort within the party, paving the way for Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s official designation as running mate.
