Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on the Minority and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to respect the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which overturned the declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.

On October 17, Speaker Bagbin declared the seats of four Members of Parliament—Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central)—vacant, sparking a significant debate within the House.

In response, Afenyo-Markin petitioned the Supreme Court to reverse the Speaker’s decision, advocating for the reinstatement of the affected MPs.

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on November 12, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Afenyo-Markin urged all parties to honor the democratic principles and the rule of law that underpin Ghana’s governance.

He emphasized the need for mutual respect and adherence to the law in the parliamentary process, encouraging all stakeholders to work together to maintain the stability and integrity of the system.

“Democracy requires decency, and that is the path that the NPP took. We expect our colleagues from the other side and the Speaker to respect the decision of the court. Ghana shines in the eyes of Africans and we must hold that dearly.

“We should all respect the decision. All we want is peace in the country and that is what we chose and that is what we got.”
