Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has ordered the immediate closure of a key bridge in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region due to its deteriorating condition.

The bridge, which spans the Offin River, serves as a crucial link for several communities, particularly farmers transporting produce from Kotokuom and surrounding areas to urban markets.

However, its worsening state—marked by fragile metal beams, deep cracks on the surface, and broken pillars—poses a severe risk to motorists and pedestrians.

Despite repeated appeals from residents for repairs, their concerns initially went unaddressed. Some turned to social media to highlight the urgency of the situation, drawing the attention of President John Dramani Mahama.

In response, the President directed the Roads and Highways Minister to assess the situation and take swift action, leading to the bridge’s closure for safety reasons.

Accompanied by engineers from the Ministry, the Minister announced that the bridge has been handed over to contractors, who will commence repair work immediately.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Security Council has advised motorists to use alternative routes while the bridge undergoes repairs
