The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has announced a renewed decongestion operation targeting the Agbogbloshie onion market. The initiative aims to reclaim public land and address growing concerns over environmental degradation and public health risks.

The Agbogbloshie site, once notorious as one of the world’s most polluted e-waste dumpsites, was cleared in July 2021 during a major cleanup exercise led by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council.

That operation, supported by armed police, resulted in the demolition of illegal structures and the eviction of over 10,000 scrap dealers. A portion of the land was subsequently earmarked for the construction of a district hospital under the government’s Agenda 111 initiative.

However, recent reports indicate that scrap dealers have returned to the site, reoccupying parts of the cleared land and reigniting concerns about unregulated activity and its impact on sanitation and public safety.

Speaking at a regional meeting of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on August 28, Municipal Chief Executive Frank Nkansah described the situation as troubling and assured residents of swift action.

He confirmed that the Assembly, with support from the Greater Accra Regional Minister and the Inspector General of Police, will begin a new decongestion exercise in the coming days.

In addition to the Agbogbloshie operation, the Assembly will also undertake a cleanup of the South Industrial Area in partnership with the Ghana Prisons Service. This broader effort forms part of the municipality’s ongoing campaign to improve urban sanitation, enforce land use regulations, and promote public health.

The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly urges all stakeholders, including market leaders and community members, to cooperate fully with the exercise and support efforts to maintain a clean and orderly environment.

For further updates, residents are encouraged to follow official communication channels and report any concerns to the Assembly’s Public Relations Unit.
