On May 22, 2024, a parliamentary session witnessed a heated exchange between Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, and Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson.

The dispute centered on Forson’s claim about the current exchange rate of the Ghanaian cedi to the US dollar.

Forson asserted that the exchange rate was 15.30 cedis per dollar, but Agyapong disputed this claim, arguing that the rate was inaccurate.

Agyapong criticized the Minority for spreading misinformation and emphasized that the current rate was not 15.3 cedis per dollar.

He also expressed frustration over the opposition’s disruptive behavior in Parliament, warning that the Majority may reciprocate if the Minority continues.

Agyapong stated, “The exchange rate is not 15.3% today, and food inflation is not 48%, but we didn’t say anything.” He added, “If the Minority continues with such conduct, we can also respond accordingly, but what will be the fate of the House?”

In response, Forson defended his statement, insisting that his figures were accurate. He claimed to have verified the exchange rate with a forex bureau operator before speaking and produced evidence to support his claim. Forson stated, “I check my facts before speaking, and I am a man of numbers. I don’t joke with my numbers.”
