Richard Ahiagbah, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has lauded Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer and Vice President, for his “stellar and exceptional” economic stewardship.
Ahiagbah made these comments during an interview on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Saturday, November 23. He highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s leadership of the Economic Management Team as pivotal in guiding Ghana through economic challenges and setting the stage for a strong recovery.
“When the NDC or anybody wants to measure the performance of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the chairman of the Economic Management Team, you will have to look at the progression and the performance over time and then you will have to acknowledge that he has done well,” he told the host, Selorm Adonoo.
Ahiagbah argued that while global and domestic challenges have tested Ghana’s economy, Dr Bawumia’s pragmatic approach has yielded positive results.
He highlighted the Vice President’s ability to stabilise the economy during challenging times, particularly amid external shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Acknowledging the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Ghana’s economy, Ahiagbah commended Dr. Bawumia for mitigating the crisis and averting an economic collapse.
“COVID-19 is a consequential event that had an impact on our economy but now, we are on a path to recovery and it has been sustainable from 2023 when we turned the corner, the economy has been on a steady rise. We saw the average performance of 5.8 expansion to the economy and so we are on a strong path back to recovery
“If you are assessing and want answers for Bawumia’s performance as one who is supporting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to grow the economy, it has been stellar, it has been one that we need to commend. But for COVID-19, we would have been on a different plain as a country and our economy would have expanded, more jobs would been created and Ghana would not have been where we are.”
