The Akrofuom District Assembly in the Ashanti Region has been praised by persons living with disabilities for its transparency in disbursing the Disability Fund. Since 2018, the Assembly has consistently supported its disabled members, helping them improve their livelihoods.

During a ceremony to distribute items funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund, Abena Kyerewaa, a member of the local disability association, expressed satisfaction with the process, emphasizing that the distributed items align with the beneficiaries’ actual needs, rather than being dictated by the Assembly’s preferences.

The Disability Fund, which now constitutes 3% of the District Assembly Common Fund, supports various economic, educational, and health needs of people with disabilities, as well as provides assistive devices.

In its third distribution of the year, the Akrofuom Assembly donated items such as fridges, wheelchairs, hairdryers, and farm spraying machines, as well as educational and medical support to 13 individuals at a cost of GHC 50,000.

District Chief Executive, Dr. Maurice Jonas Woode, highlighted the Assembly’s commitment to regular needs assessments and monitoring of how the items are used, noting that the initiative has significantly reduced street begging by persons with disabilities in the district.
