President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged the support of Ghanaians to Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, who has been elected as the new Commonwealth Secretary-General.
Madam Ayorkor Botchwey emerged victorious in a closely contested election among Commonwealth Heads of Government during a retreat held in Apia.

In a post on his Facebook page, President Akufo-Addo expressed his pride and joy at Ayorkor Botchwey’s election as the seventh Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, noting that she is the first Ghanaian to hold this prestigious position.
He highlighted her strength of character and dedication to service, which reflects positively on Ghana’s standing among its peers.

“Over the years, I have witnessed her unwavering commitment and grace in serving Ghana, Africa, and the international community. Her tenure as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration showcases her dedication to fostering partnerships and bridging divides.
I am confident that her vision of inclusivity and progress will inspire the Commonwealth family and lead it toward a hopeful and united future,” he stated.

Addressing fellow Heads of State and Government, he thanked them for their confidence in Ghana’s candidate, emphasizing that her selection is a testament to her advocacy for shared values.
Akufo-Addo expressed hope that under Ayorkor Botchwey’s leadership, the Commonwealth would thrive as a beacon of cooperation and strength.
He also extended gratitude to the outgoing Secretary-General, the Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, for her exceptional service and wished her well in her future endeavors.
He thanked Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afe and the people of Samoa for their warm hospitality during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
For her part, Madam Ayorkor Botchwey acknowledged the responsibility ahead of her following her election. In a post on her X page, she expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support from Commonwealth leaders, stating, “A lot of work lies ahead, but together, we shall work for a New Commonwealth that works for all its citizens.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also shared an artwork on social media expressing gratitude to Commonwealth leaders for their trust in Ayorkor Botchwey.
Additionally, the official Commonwealth Secretariat account announced her selection, stating, “Today at #CHOGM2024, Commonwealth Heads of Government have selected the Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey as the incoming Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.”
The outgoing Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, shared her sentiments on X, expressing her honor in passing the baton to Ayorkor Botchwey, who will be uniquely blessed to serve in this esteemed role.
