President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially inaugurated Phase III of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, a major step in providing an advanced secondary referral hospital for the Upper East Region of Ghana.

The project, a key component of the government’s effort to improve healthcare services nationwide, will ensure that remote communities across the region gain access to modern medical facilities.

At the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, August 15, President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that this upgrade would address the healthcare needs of the Upper East Region.

He highlighted the ambitious goal of completing Phase III by the end of the year and thanked all stakeholders for their dedication.

Phase III, which began with a USD 12 million loan from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) in 2008, has evolved through several stages.

Initial construction was overseen by SAUDCONSULT, which focused on the hospital’s design and construction.

Subsequent phases included the completion of the Adjunct Clinical Block in 2017, following consultations with the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, and SFD.

An additional USD 20 million loan from SFD facilitated the construction of essential facilities not covered by the initial loan.

The upgraded hospital now features a modern mortuary block, medical gas plant, energy farm, staff accommodation, solid waste management system, comprehensive fence wall, state-of-the-art kitchen, Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), and a laundry facility.

The new Phase III also includes a state-of-the-art CT scan unit, which Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye noted will provide significant relief to residents by reducing the need to travel to Tamale for CT scan services, particularly for detecting stroke and other critical conditions.

Mohammed Al-Shammari, General Director of African Operations for the Saudi Fund for Development, emphasized Saudi Arabia’s continued support for development and humanitarian projects in Ghana.

He highlighted the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital project as a testament to the strong bilateral relationship and shared commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure.
