In his final State of the Nation Address on Friday, January 3, 2025, Ghana’s outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo celebrated the country’s progress in sports infrastructure, highlighting significant developments aimed at enhancing the nation’s capacity to host international events.

Akufo-Addo pointed to the construction of approximately 150 Astroturf pitches across the country and the revitalization of existing sports facilities as pivotal achievements. These efforts were instrumental in Ghana’s successful hosting of the 13th African Games in Accra.
“The development of over 150 Astroturf pitches and the rehabilitation of our sports stadia have strengthened Ghana’s reputation as a hub for international sporting events, including the successful hosting of the 2023 All African Games,” Akufo-Addo remarked.
The 2023 African Games, held in Ghana for the first time, featured over 13,000 athletes and officials from across Africa. The event, which took place from March 8 to 23, 2024, saw Ghana secure 69 medals across various disciplines.
The infrastructure development for the Games included an investment of $195 million, which funded the construction of the Borteyman Sports Complex and the completion of the University of Ghana Stadium.
