During the Afrafranto Mega Victory Walk in Kumasi on October 19, 2024, Kwame Owusu Danso, the running mate of Alan Kyerematen, delivered a compelling address that drew historical parallels between Kyerematen and Ghana’s founding father, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Owusu Danso emphasized that just as Nkrumah departed from the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) to form the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in the quest for political independence, Kyerematen has similarly broken away from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to launch the Movement for Change, dedicated to achieving economic independence for Ghana.
“Many did not grasp Nkrumah’s vision when he left the UGCC for the CPP,” Owusu Danso stated, adding that Nkrumah’s determination ultimately led to Ghana’s political liberation. He believes history is repeating itself with Kyerematen’s recent departure from the NPP.
“Alan Kyerematen is Ghana’s next Kwame Nkrumah, but this time for economic independence,” he proclaimed, to enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.
The comparison to Nkrumah resonated deeply, as Owusu Danso noted that Kyerematen’s bold decision to part ways with the NPP has drawn both skepticism and confusion.
However, he expressed confidence that, like Nkrumah, Kyerematen will be vindicated in the long run. He emphasized that the ultimate goal is to liberate Ghanaians from economic constraints that have hindered progress for decades.
Owusu Danso highlighted the critical nature of economic independence, questioning the value of political freedom when many citizens remain impoverished.
He asserted that Kyerematen’s vision centers on achieving economic liberation, which is why he founded the Movement for Change to combat poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment.
He presented Kyerematen’s Great Transformational Plan (GTP) as the key to realizing this vision, describing it as an ambitious framework aimed at job creation, industrial transformation, and ensuring that Ghana’s resources benefit all citizens.
“Just as Nkrumah articulated his vision for a free Ghana, Alan has put forth his plan for economic transformation,” he noted.
Owusu Danso rallied the youth, the majority in attendance, to support Kyerematen’s movement, likening their role to that of the youth in Nkrumah’s time during the fight for political independence.
“Today, the youth will lead the charge for economic freedom, just as they did for political independence,” he asserted, calling on them to unite behind Kyerematen as their predecessors did for Nkrumah.
The message of economic independence struck a chord with the thousands present at the event, reinforcing Kyerematen’s image as a transformative leader with the vision to usher Ghana into a new era of prosperity.
As the day concluded in Kumasi, it was evident that the Movement for Change had gained significant momentum, fueled by Owusu Danso’s declaration that Alan Kyerematen represents “Ghana’s next Kwame Nkrumah.”
