The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has reaffirmed his resolve to push ahead with plans to ban the use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial activities, despite mounting opposition from driver unions and sections of the public.
The proposed policy, which also includes a ban on the importation of the popular Voxy vehicles, has sparked intense debate within the transport sector.
Many commercial drivers who rely on the vehicles for their daily operations have expressed concern about the potential impact on their livelihoods, arguing that the decision could lead to job losses and increased transportation costs.
However, the NRSA maintains that the move is necessary to address growing safety concerns associated with the use of such vehicles for public transport.
Mr. Amaliba made it clear that while stakeholder engagement will be part of the process, the authority will not compromise on its core mandate of ensuring road safety and protecting lives.
“The people who are against it are those who are doing the wrong things. Those whose families have died as a result of the carnage on the roads will not be supporting them. We are not to please them.
“The mandate is to ensure safety on our roads, reduce crashes, and ensure that we put in programmes that will also ensure that the crashes are reduced.
“So we are not bothered about anybody who thinks that regulations should not be implemented. We are a lawless country. We are so lawless that even if regulations are coming, we seem to be kicking against them.
“I have been sent here to do what is right, and I am going to do it as it is. I am not going to listen to people who are wrongdoers.”
