Protesters at the anti-galamsey demonstration on Thursday, October 3, called for increased participation in the final two days of protests scheduled for Friday and Saturday, October 4 and 5, 2024.
The three-day protest, organized by concerned citizens, seeks to demand urgent action against illegal mining activities (galamsey) that are wreaking havoc on water bodies and land.

Protesters are also advocating for the release of Democracy Hub activists who were detained following a similar protest held from September 21-23.
Thursday’s demonstration began at Okponglo and concluded at the Accra Sports Stadium car park, drawing hundreds of young participants.
Demonstrators took turns encouraging more individuals to join the movement in the coming days to strengthen their message and advocate for more effective solutions to the galamsey crisis.
“We want you to come in your numbers. Protest, and stand up for what is right in the country. For how long will Ghana continue to be like this? Go to the airport, people are travelling each and every day. Consciously or unconsciously, they are fed up.“Now the country needs us and we all have to come here tomorrow. Do not be afraid of anyone. Comply with the rules as given by the police and nothing will happen to you,” one of the protesters Joshua Kpe said.
Another stated: “We are here as responsible citizens to make a mark that we are prepared to make sure that Ghana is secured for the future. That is why we are saying ‘Say no to galamsey’.”
