Several political parties in Ghana, including the All People’s Congress (APC) and the Movement for Change, have called for the resignation of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) following what they term as poor management of the 2024 general elections.

In interviews with Channel One News, party representatives stressed the need for urgent reforms within the EC to restore public confidence in the electoral process.

The APC’s Presidential Candidate specifically called for immediate structural and operational reforms within the Commission to ensure future elections are transparent and efficiently conducted.

In an interview with Channel One News, he criticized the delayed collation and declaration of both parliamentary and presidential results, labeling the situation as unacceptable. He also highlighted the inefficiencies of the process, questioning why results were still being gathered from collation centers two days after the elections.

“If we were using a digital voting process, by now we would have finished having the results. Till now, the EC is struggling to gather all results from collation centers to the main national center. What is that? Are we voting for 150 million people?” he said.

Addressing incidents of election-related violence in certain regions, he called for swift action against those responsible to maintain peace and protect Ghana’s democracy.

Courage Nobi, the Deputy Director for Policy at the Movement for Change, also expressed dissatisfaction with the EC’s handling of the election process, joining the call for the resignation of the Electoral Commissioner.

“The EC I believe has not conducted itself properly. The Electoral Commission needs improvement. The commissioners should by themselves step down after this election. Declaring the results they should add that they are stepping  down so that we reinvent that organisation to become an organisation Ghanaians are confident in”

In contrast, the Deputy Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Joyce Larbi praised the Electoral Commission for conducting what she called a smooth and largely peaceful election.

“The EC headed by Jean Mensa has done well. It is not an easy task. Even when conducting an internal election as a political party, you go through many things. It is not easy, but she and her team have been able to do well,” she stated.
