Asante Kotoko SC has strongly condemned the violent incidents that marred their Ghana Premier League match against Nsoatreman FC during the matchweek 19 fixture at Nana Kronmansah II Park.
In an official statement, the club described how their team faced hostility from some home supporters upon their arrival at the stadium. Despite the tense atmosphere, Kotoko remained committed to fair play and continued with the match.
However, the situation deteriorated as missiles were repeatedly thrown at Kotoko’s bench, making the environment unsafe for players and officials. The tension escalated when Kotoko’s Head of Media sustained a serious ear injury after being struck by an object.
The violence intensified when some supporters invaded the pitch, physically attacking Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara, and continuing to throw missiles at him.
Reports also indicate that media personnel and traveling supporters from Kumasi were attacked. Tragically, a Kotoko supporter known as “Polley,” who had been stabbed during the violence, later died from his injuries at the hospital.
The club expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Kotoko fraternity.
The violence also led to significant damage to Kotoko’s property, including laptops, communication devices, and other essential equipment used by their technical team and media staff.
The club described this level of destruction as unacceptable, calling for stronger security measures at league venues.
Despite these security challenges, Kotoko continued and completed the match in the spirit of fairness and sportsmanship.
However, the club expressed concern over the persistent hooliganism in Ghanaian football, which endangers players, officials, and supporters.
Asante Kotoko has pledged full cooperation with the Ghana Football Association in any investigations and has called for swift and firm action against those responsible.
The club emphasized that football must be played in a secure and fair environment, stressing that such acts of violence should not be tolerated.
Kotoko urged all stakeholders to take decisive steps to ensure the safety of teams, officials, and fans, reaffirming their commitment to professionalism and fair play in Ghanaian football.
