The Nkawie Circuit Court has remanded 13 alleged illegal miners for unlawful entry and mining in the Jimmirah Forest Reserve at Amangoase in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The miners are accused of mining in the forest reserve, which is currently undergoing afforestation. Compartment 18 of the Jimmirah Forest Reserve is being reforested under an agreement with a private developer, according to the Forest Services Division in the Nkawie District.

However, illegal miners recently invaded the area in search of gold deposits, hindering the afforestation efforts. Inhabitants of Amangoase, in collaboration with Forestry Commission officers, mobilized to arrest the 13 illegal miners.

The miners have been remanded into police custody and are set to reappear in court on August 6, 2024.
