Health officials in the Ashanti Region have expressed concern over a sharp rise in cancer cases, with over 16,000 reported in 2024, compared to 11,000 in 2023.
Breast, cervical, and prostate cancers remain the most prevalent. Breast cancer cases increased significantly from 292 in 2023 to 561 in 2024, while cervical cancer rose from 298 to 522.

Despite a decline in prostate cancer cases, from 1,208 in 2023 to 996 in 2024, it continues to be the most common type of cancer in the region.
Health authorities warn that, without heightened awareness and preventive measures, the trend could worsen, posing a significant public health challenge.
As part of the World Cancer Day celebration, themed “United by Unique”, Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr Fred Adomako-Boateng, emphasized the high cost of cancer treatment.
“Although these cancers are among the leading causes of death, they are unfortunately not highlighted enough,” he said.
He urged the public to adopt healthier lifestyles and prioritize preventive measures to curb the growing burden of the disease.
