The Ashanti Regional Hospital at Sewua in the Bosomtwe District, like several other health facilities commissioned by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) shortly before leaving office in 2025, has yet to be brought into active use.

Despite its inauguration over a year ago, the facility has no access to basic utilities such as electricity and water, leaving it non-functional.

Medical equipment installed at the hospital remains untouched, with parts of the building gradually deteriorating.

A visit by Citi News showed an abandoned facility, where expected healthcare activity has given way to silence, while vegetation continues to spread across the compound.

The Assembly Member for the Sewua Electoral Area, Prince Kwame Adutwum, said the circumstances surrounding the commissioning raised concerns from the outset.

According to him, key stakeholders in the community were excluded from the process, including himself, unit committee members, traditional leaders, and residents.

“The day they came to commission the hospital, I, as the Assembly Member, was not aware. The Unit Committee members had no idea what was going on, the chiefs and the community members also did not attend because they were not informed. I think it was rushed because it was done just three days before the swearing-in of the new government. It is rather unfortunate,” he said.

He also urged government to take immediate steps to operationalise the facility, warning that its continued non-use is increasing pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Mr. Adutwum also expressed frustration over what he says are unfulfilled assurances that the hospital would be made functional under President John Dramani Mahama, noting that no visible progress has been made so far.

“Upon assuming office, President Mahama pledged to initiate measures to operationalise the hospital, but up till now, nothing has been done. I am pleading with government to fulfil his promise,” he added.
