Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, Chairman of the Economic Sub-Committee for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manifesto, has advised the two main presidential candidates in the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to avoid taking on new debts if they are elected.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah stressed the need to prioritize the completion of stalled projects and initiatives, such as the Agenda 111 project, to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians.

He emphasized that managing existing debt and obligations should be the primary focus, rather than embarking on new expenditures.

“Over-expenditure derails everything, so for me, how do we tighten all those loose ends? Let us not create new debts. Let us focus on paying the IPPs, contractors, and clearing arrears,” he stated.

“In the first term, the priority should be finishing Agenda 111 and other stalled projects, rather than building new infrastructure.”

He also called for measures to slow down the pace of the country’s growing debt stock, ensuring fiscal prudence and financial stability during the next administration.

“How do we get to the next level where the debt is not building up at a faster rate? The debt will grow but how do we slow down growth in the debt?”
