The Association of Liberal Muslims-Ghana (ALMG) has extended its congratulations to President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his victory in the 2024 presidential election.

In a statement signed by its leader, Alhaji Umar Harris, the association described the victory as a testament to Mahama’s dedication, vision, and commitment to the greater good of the nation.

ALMG expressed confidence in Mahama’s leadership and pledged its unwavering support as he prepares to assume office on January 7, 2025.

“We celebrate this remarkable achievement and are confident in your ability to lead Ghana with vision and dedication. Your success is our collective success, and we are committed to helping you achieve your goals,” the statement read.

The association also highlighted key concerns of the Muslim community, urging the incoming administration to address them. These include:

  1. Immediate signing of the anti-LGBTQI bill – ALMG stressed the urgency of finalizing the legislation, which has faced delays under the outgoing administration.
  2. Enactment of the Islamic Marriage and Divorce Bill – The association called for legal recognition and implementation of this long-awaited bill.
  3. Hijab Freedom in Public Offices – The group emphasized the need for Muslim women (Muslimahs) to wear the hijab freely in public offices without fear of harassment or discrimination.
  4. Reduction of Hajj Fares – ALMG appealed for a significant reduction in the cost of Hajj pilgrimages, which has been a burden for many Ghanaian Muslims.

Alhaji Umar Harris urged the president-elect to fulfill these promises, stressing that their implementation would reflect inclusivity and respect for the rights of all Ghanaians.

“We are counting on your leadership to bring about these changes, which will positively impact the lives of many Muslims in the country,” the statement added.

The association expressed optimism about the future under Mr. Mahama’s administration and wished him success in his endeavors to lead the country towards progress and unity.
