The African Union (AU) Election Observation Team, led by former Ethiopian President H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, has expressed confidence in Ghana’s upcoming general elections on Saturday, December 7, 2024, praising the country as a model for democracy in Africa.

In a courtesy visit to the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, in Accra, H.E. Sahle-Work commended Ghana’s track record in elections and democratic practices, expressing optimism for another successful election in 2024.

She highlighted the crucial role of Ghana’s Ministry of the Interior in ensuring the success of the elections, stressing the need for measures that build on previous elections to benefit the people.

Minister Henry Quartey welcomed the AU delegation and assured them that robust security measures, including the Election Security Task Force and necessary logistics, have been put in place to ensure a peaceful election and strengthen Ghana’s democracy.

He also shared that extensive consultations have been held with political parties, the Electoral Commission, and other key stakeholders to ensure transparency and peace during the elections.

The Minister also assured that President Nana Akufo-Addo, a man of peace who believes in the rule of law, came to power peacefully and will exit peacefully.

The visit of the AU Election Observation Team to Ghana ahead of the general elections aligns with the Commission’s mandate to support Member States in consolidating democracy, peace, and security.
