Ghana Veterinary Service Department raises concerns over high rise in Avian Influenza disease in some regions of Ghana.
About twelve regions have been listed over possible outbreak of bird flu disease known as Avian Influenza by the Ghana Veterinary Service Department.
Strict measures have been put in place to prevent an outbreak of the disease in the following regions such North, Bono, Western, Western-North, Eastern and Oti Region.
In recent months, some regions including Greater Accra, Central, Ashanti and Volta Region recorded over 33,000 poultry deaths due to the Avian Influenza disease.
Greater Accra, Central and Volta Region had already recorded cases about weeks ago and Ashanti Region now has the newest record in the outbreak of the disease.
A total banned on the importation of poultry and poultry products from neighbouring countries with records of an outbreak of such diseases was announced by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
Measures such as movement of poultry and poultry products within or from affected regions and other neighbouring countries goes through thoroughly inspection and issuance permit are under control.
The Ministry has intensified public awareness and sensitisation especially in the affected areas.
In an exclusive interview by GhanaTalksRadio with the Risk Communicator of the Ghana Veterinary Service Department, Mr Benjamin Sasu, said,”the outbreak began from three regions, then to four regions. So now, all the regions are on alert. The Emergency Response Team is dealing with the regions and continuing with the education and awareness creation.”
“We are hoping that the ministry of Agric will continue to support in terms of logistics and staff strength. So far, we are on guard, updating farmers and other stakeholders on what is happening.”he added.
