The Baba Yara Sports Stadium has been closed for renovation following widespread criticism after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.

The poor condition of the pitch has been a major concern, leading the National Sports Authority (NSA), which manages the facility, to shut it down for essential improvements.

The NSA aims to complete the renovations before Ghana’s next international fixture in October, when the Black Stars will face Sudan.

Although the facility was temporarily approved by CAF for the Angola match, the continental football governing body has warned that Ghana’s future home matches might be relocated if improvements are not made.

Both Ghana’s coach Otto Addo and Angola’s coach Pedro Gonçalves expressed disappointment with the pitch, with Gonçalves noting, “A country like Ghana deserves a better pitch,” emphasizing the difficulties encountered during the match.

Due to the stadium closure, Asante Kotoko will need to find an alternative venue for their Ghana Premier League home matches.
