The Public Procurement Authority (PPA) has declined Parliament’s request to pay the private law firm, Sory@Law, for legal services using public funds, according to information obtained by 3News.

Documents reveal that Speaker of Parliament, through a single-source procurement approach, intended to hire Sory@Law with a monthly retainer fee of GHC5,000, plus up to GHC300,000 for handling constitutional cases in the Supreme Court.

The PPA, however, disapproved, advising that “since the Attorney-General is the Principal Legal Advisor, Parliamentary Service should continue to utilize the A-G’s services for all legal matters.”

Former Supreme Court Justice William A. Atuguba had previously noted that institutions like the judiciary and legislature may engage their own counsel when in conflict with the Attorney-General but may also rely on the A-G’s services if they choose.
