The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is now set to endorse Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the December 7 elections.

This comes after the flagbearer completed the necessary consultations, with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP Majority in Parliament approving Dr. Opoku Prempeh.

Before presenting his running mate to the party’s National Council, Dr. Bawumia met with Dr. Opoku Prempeh and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) on Sunday evening to resolve their differences and plan their strategy.

On Friday, June 28, 2024, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin confirmed that the caucus fully supports Dr. Bawumia’s choice of NAPO as his running mate.

He revealed that the Majority’s leadership met with Dr. Bawumia to discuss his choice.

Speaking to Citi FM, Mr. Afenyo-Markin said the party’s National Council will soon finalize the decision.

“Yes, our party leader and flagbearer met with Parliament’s leadership for an extensive discussion about the party’s direction for the 2024 elections. The conclusion was that our colleague, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is his choice for running mate. It’s standard practice to inform and engage the caucus about the decision,” he said.

He added, “Afterwards, I spoke with the caucus, and the feedback has been positive. Most members support his choice. For it to be official, there will be a National Council meeting.

According to him, there will be a general consensus, with no issues. We also asked about the President’s views, and they were very positive.

So, all necessary parties have been informed, and everything is set for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh to join him in leading the party for the 2024 elections.”
