In a key political move, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, met privately with Majority Leader Alex Afenyo-Markin on Friday, June 28, at the Vice President’s residence.

The discussion focused on Bawumia’s choice of running mate for the December elections.

Sources say Dr. Bawumia has selected Mathew Opoku Prempeh and asked Afenyo-Markin to inform the Majority Caucus in Parliament, which he has done.

A National Council meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, where Dr. Bawumia will formally present his choice to the party leaders for consideration and approval.

Choosing Opoku Prempeh, a seasoned politician and current Minister of Energy, signals a strategic effort by the NPP to boost its chances in the Ashanti Region, an important electoral area.

As Ghana gears up for a highly competitive election, political observers are watching how this choice will impact the NPP’s campaign and resonate with voters.
