Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has pledged to revolutionize Ghana’s mining sector if elected in the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections.
According to Dr. Bawumia, his administration will prioritize empowering Ghanaian small-scale miners by allocating majority of the mining concessions to them.
He emphasized that his primary objective is to create wealth for small-scale miners, aiming to make many of them millionaires and multi-millionaires.

While addressing small-scale miners and youth groups in Tarkwa during his Western Region campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia stated, “We will allocate mining concessions to small-scale miners and formalize their operations by providing licenses. Everyone will register with the Small-Scale Miners Association using their Ghana card.”
He also announced plans to strengthen the representation of the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in districts that currently lack representation.
Dr. Bawumia further emphasized the crucial role chiefs will play in issuing mining licenses to miners in their communities.
Additionally, he promised to amend the country’s mining laws to decentralize key agencies like the Minerals Commission and the EPA, giving more autonomy to local districts.
