Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially filed his nomination to contest in the party’s upcoming flagbearer election, scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Dr. Bawumia submitted his nomination forms at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia. The event drew hundreds of party supporters who gathered to show their solidarity, creating a charged and celebratory atmosphere marked by chants, music, and party regalia.

Speaking briefly after filing, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude for the support and reaffirmed his commitment to leading the party into the next phase of national development. “This is a moment of renewal and unity. I am ready to serve and build on the progress we’ve made,” he said.

The flagbearer contest is expected to be highly competitive, with several prominent figures vying for the position. Dr. Bawumia’s closest rival is Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, who filed his nomination earlier this week.

Other aspirants include former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, Abetifi MP and former Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who is expected to file his nomination later today.

The January 2026 primaries are seen as a critical juncture for the NPP, as the party seeks to consolidate its leadership and prepare for the next general elections. Party insiders say the outcome will shape the NPP’s strategic direction and influence its appeal to voters across the country.

Meanwhile, party stalwart Francis Addai-Nimoh has withdrawn from the race, citing concerns over what he described as “unhealthy monetisation,” internal bias, and poor timing. His withdrawal has sparked discussions about the fairness and inclusivity of the party’s internal electoral processes.

The NPP leadership has assured members and the public of a transparent and credible election process, emphasizing the importance of unity and democratic participation as the party charts its future course.
