Benjamin Azamati, Ghana’s national 100m record holder, is determined to make a successful comeback in the 2025 track season after a challenging 2024.
Azamati, 26, made history at the Olympic Games by becoming the first Ghanaian sprinter to reach the semi-final of the 100m since 2004. He was later joined by Abdul Rasheed Saminu, both sharing in this achievement.
Despite earning an Olympic ticket through ranking, Azamati’s 2024 season fell short of expectations, as he struggled to break the 10-second barrier.

His last sub-10s performance came over two years ago, and in an effort to reignite the form that saw him set the national record with a 9.90s run in 2022, Azamati has made changes to his training environment.
In August, he announced his collaboration with John Bolton, a respected athletics coach who works with US Olympic bronze medalist Fred Kerley. Azamati is hopeful that this new partnership will help him reclaim his spot among the world’s elite sprinters.
Azamati believes the decision to switch camps will eventually pay off as the 2025 World Athletics championship looms.
“We looking forward to doing well next year. I’ve had a change of environment and left my coach to another coach, so I’m hoping to do very well next year. You’re also at an age where it is considered to be your prime age in athletics, and so I’m looking forward to run next year to compete for the country,” he said in his closing remark at the Junior Olympics event.
The 2025 World Championships will take place from September 13 to September 21.
