Bishop Salifu Amoako, a prominent religious leader, has stated that the recent fatal accident in East Legon has garnered significant national attention largely due to his name.

During a sermon to his congregation on October 20, Bishop Amoako remarked that the incident would not have attracted such widespread coverage had it involved a less notable figure, such as an ‘Okada’ rider.

He emphasized to his church members that the event was purely accidental and insisted that his son did not intentionally harm anyone. “This was an accident. My son did not come armed to kill anyone. He was involved in a tragic accident, and I am not responsible for it.

This situation is receiving so much attention because of my name. If this had involved an Okada accident, would anyone have noticed? It is because of my name, so let’s stay calm and wait to see what the Lord will do,” he stated in a recording shared by Accra-based Citi FM.

On October 12, 2024, Elrad Salifu Amoako, aged 16, was driving a Jaguar SUV with registration number GN 7801 – 20 when he collided with a 4×4 Acura vehicle (registration number GR 2542 -23) driven by Joseph Ackah, who had four passengers. Both vehicles were severely damaged and subsequently caught fire.

Bishop Salifu Amoako and his wife, Mouha Amoako, were later arrested and charged with allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a vehicle. The bishop issued a public apology via a widely circulated video.

The bishop’s remarks during the sermon have elicited mixed reactions from the public.

While some view his explanation as reasonable, others feel he may have overstepped, especially considering that the case is still under legal review.
