Black Stars coach Otto Addo has expressed concerns over the current team’s lack of quality compared to previous Black Stars squads, identifying this as a significant challenge for Ghana.

This statement follows the team’s disappointing performance in September’s international matches, where they recorded a draw and a loss against Sudan.
Notably, a 2-0 defeat to Sudan in Libya has put Ghana at risk of missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2004.
Reflecting on his experiences as a member of Ghana’s inaugural World Cup qualifying team in 2006 alongside prominent players like Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari, and Michael Essien, Addo urged fans not to compare the current generation to the past.
“I believe people are somewhat fixated on the past. We often reference earlier teams. I can’t equate our current players to those who have played for clubs like Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, and Inter Milan.
While our current players may reach that level in the future, we’re not there yet,” he stated in a press conference after the Sudan match.
Ghana has faced challenges in 2024, achieving only two wins so far, which has led to significant criticism from supporters. In the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, the Black Stars have yet to secure a victory, having scored just once and earned two points from a possible nine.
Despite the negativity surrounding the team, the 49-year-old coach reaffirmed his confidence in the players. “It’s incredibly challenging for the players when there is so much negativity before the game. If we focus on our strengths and maintain consistency in our play, combining it with our passion, we can progress even from this difficult situation,” he added.
Ghana is scheduled to face Niger and Angola before the conclusion of the 2024 international window.
