The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has initiated an investigation into the distressing situation faced by Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who were stranded for over 12 hours at Al Abraq Airport in Libya.

The incident occurred as the team was preparing to play Libya in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier scheduled for Tuesday.

According to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), the team was diverted to Al Abraq Airport, located about two hours from Benghazi, without any prior notification.

Upon arrival, they found no transport or reception arranged for them, forcing the players to spend the night at the airport without essential amenities such as food, water, and Wi-Fi.

CAF has confirmed its communication with both Nigerian and Libyan authorities regarding the incident.

In their statement, they indicated that the matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for further investigation and that appropriate actions would be taken against those responsible for violating CAF statutes and regulations.

In light of the ordeal, Nigeria has expressed that it will not participate in the scheduled match, and the team has since secured a flight back home. As players return to their clubs, it appears unlikely that the AFCON qualifier will go ahead as planned.
