The Kwabenya Circuit Court has adjourned Newel Gavu’s case to September 18, 2024, following the Attorney General’s request for additional time to file the results of his mental evaluation.

Gavu, who was filmed vandalizing the Big Six statues at the Kotoka International Airport roundabout, was ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment by the court on September 2, 2024.

As of 8:32 a.m. on Tuesday, the mental health report had not been submitted, and the investigator was absent.

State Attorney Natalie Korkor Hammond stated that the decision to move forward with prosecution will depend on the results of this assessment.

Hammond told Citi News, “We hope to proceed with the prosecution once we receive the results. During his last court appearance, Gavu displayed unusual behavior, leading the judge to mandate a psychiatric evaluation before any further decisions.”

Gavu was arrested on August 31, 2024, by airport police after being seen destroying the busts of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and other members of the Big Six. The motive for his actions is still unknown.

In response to the vandalism, the Ghana Airport Company Limited has begun efforts to replace the damaged monuments.
