The national currency – the cedi turns sixty this year. It is a milestone the Bank of Ghana is commemorating under the theme 60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.

The official launch of the Cedi@60 celebrations is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre, with President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour.

The national celebration will feature a Currency Conference bringing together leading experts from global central banks, academia and the private sector to reflect on six decades of Ghana’s monetary journey and explore the future of its financial system.

Other flagship activities include regional roadshows, public education campaigns on clean note handling and currency security.

There will also be youth-focused competitions in art, music and essays designed to deepen public appreciation for the history and significance of the Cedi.

The Bank of Ghana believes the Cedi@60 commemoration offers a strategic opportunity to celebrate Ghana’s monetary sovereignty, strengthen public engagement on currency management and revive national confidence in the cedi as a pillar of economic stability and identity.

First introduced on July 19, 1965, the cedi has undergone multiple reforms and redesigns.

It symbolises the country’s economic independence and resilience over six decades of national development.

The celebration is expected to culminate in renewed public awareness of the legacy of the local currency and a stronger collective effort to protect its integrity for future generations.
