Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is focused on addressing his team’s persistent defensive problems after a 2-1 defeat to a youthful Real Madrid side in Charlotte, concluding their United States tour.

Real Madrid’s goals came from Dani Ceballos in the 19th minute and Brahim Diaz in the 27th minute.

Ceballos capitalized on a deflected Lucas Vazquez shot, while Diaz scored from a tight angle past Chelsea’s new goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

Chelsea’s lone goal was a header from Noni Madueke, assisted by a cross from Enzo Fernandez in the 39th minute.

Even though Chelsea’s defense improved in the second half, keeping Real Madrid from scoring, their weaknesses were still clear. Christopher Nkunku also missed a one-on-one chance.

Maresca pointed out that the team’s defensive issues, especially the high defensive line, are a major concern.

This problem has persisted since last season under Mauricio Pochettino, when Chelsea conceded a club-record 63 goals in the league.

“We are trying to lower the defensive line by about four or five meters to gain an advantage,” Maresca said. “Last year, we conceded many goals because of this problem. Hopefully, we can fix it very soon.”
