Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and other government officials have visited the residence of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, to commiserate with the Rawlings family following her passing.
The delegation, comprising senior government officials and party representatives, expressed their condolences and signed a book of condolence in honour of the late stateswoman. The family expressed gratitude for the show of support during their period of mourning.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra at the age of 76.
Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, she held the role across both the military and civilian administrations led by her husband — from the AFRC and PNDC eras through to the Fourth Republic.
A pioneer in women’s empowerment, Nana Konadu founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, which championed women’s rights, social and economic development, and political participation.
She later formed the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 2012 and made history as Ghana’s first female presidential candidate that same year. In 2018, she published It Takes a Woman, a biography chronicling her life and advocacy for gender equality.
Nana Konadu leaves behind a legacy of resilience, leadership, and service to Ghana. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
