Cholera outbreak in Western region claims 14 lives

The Western Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Yaw Ofori Yeboah, has confirmed 14 fatalities from the ongoing cholera outbreak, with Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality identified as the epicentres.

Speaking to Citi News in Takoradi, Dr. Yeboah revealed that the outbreak has spread across eight districts, resulting in over 800 reported cases.

He highlighted the intensified efforts by the Regional Public Health Promotion Office, including a ban on vegetable sales by food vendors, and urged residents to strictly adhere to preventive measures to curb the disease’s spread.

“We have lost 14 people so far, currently, the epicentre is Sekondi-Takoradi and adjoining districts, Shama and Ahanta West. We’re appealing to everybody to take the basic precautions. It’s so important if we don’t do that we’re going to lose more people, so please personal hygiene is very important, we must wash our hands, and the food we eat must be warm. As soon as anybody gets these symptoms, he/she must report to the nearest health facility.”

He further said that cholera treatment is free and has all the needed logistics to care for affected ones but urged all to report suspected cases immediately to health facilities.

Deputy Director in charge of Public Health, Dr. Gifty Amugi also shed light on the free cholera vaccinations for children over one year and encouraged parents to ensure their children get vaccinated.
