The Minority in Parliament has warned that Ghana could face a cholera epidemic before the new administration takes office if the Akufo-Addo government does not take immediate action.
As of December 17, 2024, the Western Region had recorded 123 cholera cases and 15 deaths, with 15 health workers also infected while treating patients.
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, criticized the government’s response, calling it gross negligence. He emphasized that the same inaction that led to the NPP’s electoral defeat should not be allowed to escalate the public health crisis.

“Without immediate and decisive interventions, Ghana risks facing a full-blown cholera epidemic before the incoming administration takes over from the outgoing NPP regime,” Akandoh warned.
He added, “It is deeply concerning that what could have been a minor cholera outbreak has instead exposed the fragility of our healthcare system. This outbreak, which should have been controlled weeks ago, continues to escalate due to systemic neglect and inefficiency.”
Akandoh urged the government to act swiftly and decisively to address these challenges by ensuring resources are adequately allocated and health workers are provided with the support they need to contain the outbreak.
