Joyce Bawa Mogtari, an aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has responded to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent statement on churches and the economy.

During his campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia claimed that churches should not be taxed and instead suggested that they should be seen as development partners.

He highlighted the significant contributions churches make to society and hinted that, if elected President, he would offer them incentives to continue their work.

However, Mogtari disagreed, stating that the church does not need incentives but rather a functional economy that improves people’s lives.

She criticized Dr. Bawumia’s proposal, suggesting that it is a desperate attempt to garner votes. In a social media post, she wrote, “Rather than offering empty promises and financial support to churches, Dr. Bawumia should focus on fixing the broken economy, which his government has mismanaged and left bankrupt.”

Mogtari emphasized that church leaders in Ghana have already spoken out against the current government’s misgovernance and economic mismanagement.

She believes that they would prefer Dr. Bawumia to prioritize improving the economy and people’s living standards rather than offering tokens of unavailable financial resources to churches and mosques.
