The leadership of the Cocoa Carriers Association has directed its members at the Tema, Takoradi, and Kumasi depots of the Cocoa Marketing Company Limited to commence an indefinite sit-down strike starting today, October 7, 2024. This action arises from ongoing concerns regarding their conditions of service.

In 2022, the association previously staged a similar strike, advocating for wage increases and better working conditions. That strike resulted in thousands of bags of cocoa beans being left unattended in various warehouses of the Cocoa Marketing Company Limited.

Raymond Atanga Abobiga, the National Chairman of the Cocoa Carriers Association, has urged all members to fully participate in this industrial action, emphasizing the need for improved conditions and fair treatment.

“We are going to report at work, but it will be at the gate of the various warehouses. And then we are not going to work until they attend to our needs and our demand. And I want the management of Cocoa Board and our directors to know that we are not against an individual and that we are fighting a just cause.

“It is as if some individuals just purpose that we are carriers and we don’t deserve to live a better life. We are carriers and they treat us as if we are not citizens or we are less privileged citizens or disadvantaged citizens for the work we do. I want to let them understand that we are doing a very delicate work as far as Cocoa Board is concerned.”
